Vintage Computer Festival
I found out that on September 12th and 13th in Wall Township NJ, there will be a vintage computer festival. The site labels it as a celebration or pre-modern computers and related technologies. The exhibits will be hands on and there appears to be a lot of lectures and live demos.
First, I think that this sort of thing is awesome. Its great to think that these events exist and wonderful for the younger folks to see what really technology was like 20 and 30+ years ago. It’s hard to believe how far we have come in this time frame and its great to see that there are organizations such as VintageTech and MARCH who sponsor this sort of event. If an event like this ever came to the Chicago area, you can be I would take my son to it.
A side note to all of this is that the site lists a vendor section. Since this is a vintage computer festival and well some of the Big Four system management vendors solutions turn 20 this year, I figure they would want to be there to showcase their old framework solutions. All kidding aside, seriously think about how 20 year old code with patched together acquisitions can do the same job of other network management/monitoring vendors that are doing it on technology built on modern day standards.
I like old things trust me I do, but having a 1989 car with new body work, new engine and host of other things added onto over the years still makes it a 1989 car working today. Yes, it still works but at what price to modern day convenience’s, safety and technology.
If you are going to the show please let me know and send me pictures. My inner geek and curiosity is running high these days.
