Product Overview
CDP Shark is a simple but powerful Cisco inventory tool. CDP Shark allows network administrators and/or auditors to quickly identify all Cisco devices within a specific realm. Values gathered include but are not limited to device names, IP addresses, and system descriptions with IOS and CatOS versions. Another important value gathered is the device serial number, important when used in conjunction with Cisco SMARTnet contracts.
CDP Sharks uses two technologies to accomplish the inventory task. The first technology is the Cisco Discovery Protocol that all Cisco devices use to discover the neighbor relationships of other directly connected Cisco devices. The other technology is the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), used to poll devices for those known CDP details. In addition to device inventory, CDP Shark can assist network administrators identify basic configuration problems with SNMP, CDP, and routing through incremental discoveries. CDP Shark can also discover the existence of Cisco IP Telephones.
