Monolith Software Presents a Video Testimonial with

An Electronic Financial Transaction Processing Company

Darrell Winfield - Vice President, Projects

For your convenience this interview is offered in five chapters, two~five minutes each. Click the tabs below to navigate to each chapter and see topical highlights for each.

1. Total Rewrite
2. Unified Monitoring
3. Master Console
4. Evaluate Options
5. One Solution

    We rewrote the entire application

  • “The biggest capital project the company has ever undertaken.”
  • “Transitioned from a large mainframe based application to a client-server based application - we rewrote the entire thing.”
  • “There are suppliers that provide this as their core business, but we decided to do it ourselves. With the click charge pricing model, these types of companies never get out of your pocket.”
  • “We wanted to be able to buy a product, license it, and then we own it, it’s done.”

Stringing together tools = Potential for failure

  • “We didn’t have the infrastructure in place. We had a few problems to solve."
  • “Our infrastructure was a complete unknown, so when you string that whole system together, there are many places where processing can go wrong. You have to engineer the infrastructure itself.”
  • “Our data center had been aging. There were many acquired monitoring tools sitting in the data center. And there was no consolidation in terms of methods of monitoring."
  • “We didn’t see any way a new platform could survive in that environment. It would just be another system put on the floor that needed monitoring.”
  • “We had to quickly remedy that potential for failure.”

Creating One Master Console from 200

  • “To create one master console for this system, we couldn’t put another solution on the floor with the existing 200 we had.”
  • “I needed to know more than if my application was ‘up’, or appeared to be up.”
  • “What I needed was instrumentation, not just monitoring.”

Overrun by solutions – evaluating options

  • “Once we completed the aggregation, we realized we’d been overrun by solutions. We were heavily invested in agent-based solutions from a lot of different vendors.”
  • “We talked with all the standard guys, and one thing was consistent.”
  • “The standard approach was, whatever we had, it had to go. If we had existing multi-year licenses, they’d have to go. We’d have to eat that.”
  • “They said the only way to consolidate was to buy all new.”
  • “We also needed to monitor and dashboard our custom application. We needed to be able to tap into the brain of this new app, and know what it was doing in real time.”

This is the right solution for us

  • “A big part of our decision was, no one but Monolith wanted to deal with our high rate of data flow and write a custom interface.”
  • “Monolith didn’t demand a rip and replace. We could leverage what we had and integrate the custom feed to the in-house applications.”
  • “We took the old technology and built an integrated dashboard to capture everything into one screen.”
  • “There’s no way we could have delivered what we did without the Monolith support.”
  • “Monolith was the only solution that could manage our custom application.”
